However, the smart spaying system has the potential to be used for pesticide application as well as to save cost while to protect the environment. Spot spraying is expected to save chemicals such as herbicides up to 80% when spraying only applied where weeds are present. The initial goal of the sprayer development is mainly to save costs for the farmers when weed control is needed under the circumstances that spots of weeds are in appearance. Further research will be focused on searching and testing more weed detection and relevant sensors available. Current version has been tried with three types of detecting sensors, i.e., laser beam, ultra sound, and color detection. The test results indicate that the system is functioning well except the weed detection. The major parts include weed detection, microchip-based controller, electronic pump, solenoid, and spraying nozzles mounted on a boom sprayer. The first prototype of the smart spraying system has been designed, laboratory tested and evaluated. It is aimed at applying appropriate technology to build a low-cost small-scale spot sprayer prototype for spraying the herbicide on the areas where only the weeds are in occurrence based on automation and precision concept. The project reported in this paper is to develop a cost-effective small-scale smart spraying system for smallholder farming in CA to implement weed control.
